Siding
The choice of which coating system to use for the following types of siding construction is dependent upon the amount of ventilation behind the siding.

  1. Shiplap
  2. Channel
  3. Tongue and Groove: In the case of Chevron and Herring Bone design patterns, collection of water in the V groove may result in coating failure. Always assure the end grains are well-coated or caulked.
  4. Board and Batten
  5. Bevel

Poor ventilation exists when the siding is applied directly to tar paper, sheathing, tyvec, etc. This results in a lack of air circulation behind the siding to allow moisture to escape.

When the siding is applied directly to rigid foam or foil foam sheeting, excessive moisture/heat build up (foil-faced) can occur resulting in poor coating adhesion (peeling). If this is the case, all the boards must be back primed prior to the installation or the construction process should be modified (see "good ventilation" below).

These will help to reduce moisture absorption by the wood siding but peeling or blistering problems may occur if the wood moisture content is above 18%.

Poor ventilation also exists when strapping is applied from one side of the house to the other. In this situation, air pockets are created with no ventilation. The only route of escape for moisture is through the siding.

If the method of construction under the siding is unknown, it is best to use the medium moisture/poor ventilation coating system.

Good ventilation exists when the siding is applied over strapping which is staggered to allow for moisture to ventilate up and out from behind the siding. In this case, the low moisture/good ventilation system is the best choice.
